Disney Sells Game Studio FoxNext to Scopely

Just last year, Disney acquired FoxNext as a part of their $71.3 billion deal for 21st Century Fox. FoxNext is responsible for titles like MARVEL Strike Force and was one of the few remaining game studios owned by Disney. Gamestop is reporting that Disney has been looking to sell the game studio for some time now. The company seems to be moving past publishing games, and the sale of FoxNext to Scopely is a good indication of that. What this means for future game titles from the media juggernaut is unclear.

Disney Infinity, their biggest gaming franchise, was cancelled back in 2016 following their decision to close Avalanche Studio in Utah.

Junction Point, Propaganda Games, and Black Rock are all gaming studios closed by Disney throughout recent years. Despite this, gaming content from Disney is not going anywhere anytime soon. In 2018, the company signed a deal with developer Jam City, who have many Pixar and Disney related releases under their belt.

FoxNext will move on with Scopely, who publish top games like Star Trek Fleet Command, and The Walking Dead: Road to Survival. In their deal with Disney, Scopely also acquires Cold Iron Studios, which is a game studio owned by FoxNext. However, Cold Iron Studios produces mobile games, and Scopely does not work on mobile titles. It is understood that Scopely will sell the studio when the deal is done.

FoxNext are currently working on a shooter game based on the sci-fi franchise Alien. There is not a lot of information on this title, though gamers can expect this release in the future for PC and consoles. As for Disney, they plan to move forward with Jam City to release videogame content in association with their properties. Whether they will continue to downsize their gaming division remains to be seen.
