Custom Hero Mechanic Revealed for Sonic Forces

3D Sonic the Hedgehog games have gotten pretty mixed reception over the past two decades. It was announced last year that the team behind two of the most positively received 3D Sonic games, Sonic Colors and Sonic Generations, have been working on the newest entry in the 3D Sonic lineup, entitled Sonic Forces.

Recently, a new announcement was made regarding Sonic Forces via the official Sonic the Hedgehog YouTube channel. This announcement confirmed that players will be able to create customized characters in the new game. The customizable options shown in the Custom Hero trailer include Upper Headgear, Middle Headgear, Lower Headgear, Gloves, Footwear, Body, Bodysuit and Skin Color, with what appears to be even more options offscreen.

The player will also be able to choose between different gadgets to give to their characters and will be able to choose their characters’ animal species from seven different options. Kotaku reports that each of these species will have its own automatic power. Wolves will automatically attract rings that are near them, Rabbits will have more invincibility frames than other characters, Cats will always keep one ring after being hit (unless they only have the one ring, I assume), Dogs will restart the level with five rings after the player has died, Bears will knock enemies further back than other characters with the homing attack, Birds will fly higher than other characters when they double jump and Hedgehogs will collect rings when they get damaged.

Sonic Forces is expected to release this Holiday season for PlayStation 4, Xbox One, Nintendo Switch and PC. You can watch the Custom Hero trailer below.
