Blizzard Post’s a Job Listing for Software/Gameplay Engineers to Work on Warcraft III

It’s amazing that Warcraft III: Reign of Chaos continues to be played to this day.  Long past its prime, especially since the juggernaut World of Warcraft came out, Blizzards original real-time-strategy game series hasn’t had a serious presence in the gaming market since its expansion, The Frozen Throne, in 2003.  But for some reason, Blizzard continues to update the game with the most recent one being this year.  The update added the ability to play with 24 players on servers, as well as native widescreen support. Hey, better late than never.  To drive that point home, earlier today, Reddit user discovered that Blizzard had posted a job listing for a “Senior Software Engineer/Gameplay” to work on Warcraft III: Reign of Chaos.  You can check out the job listing here.

Blizzard is always looking for people to either help maintain their status quo, or to come up with new and exciting ideas.  That’s why this job listing may raise a few eyebrows, as all it’s asking for is to keep the gameplay for Warcraft III mostly intact. However, this may indicate that Blizzard is doing one of two things.  First, they may be hiring for a developer to get used to the gameplay mechanics so they can then focus on a potential remaster of Warcraft III, similar to how they did with StarCraft last year.  StarCraft Remastered was critically acclaimed upon release, and the updated graphics and cutscenes were a key focus to making the original relevant in the gaming market once again.  If the same thing is done for Warcraft III, the result could be very similar.

Secondly, this may eventually lead to what most fans of the original series have been asking for, Warcraft 4.  A title that has long been rumored to be in development, Blizzard has never acknowledged its existence, and there has been no information to support that it’s being made.  However, with the recent update, and the new job post, some may look at this and hope for Blizzard to finally develop the long awaited sequel.

Blizzard has been pushing the Warcraft name a lot this year, such as the Battle for Alterac Pass event that took place in Heroes of The Storm, and the upcoming expansion for World of Warcraft, Battle for Azeroth, which releases next month.  With all of this happening, the idea for a new Warcraft game makes sense, and knowing Blizzard, they’re going to put all of their effort into the project if it happens.  Blizzcon 2018 is not too far off, so we may see an announcement for something then.
