Atlus has announced an entirely new Persona 5 spin-off game for mobile platforms. The game which is being developed from Chinese publisher Perfect World Games is titled Persona 5: The Phantom X, or P5X for short. Alongside the announcement came both story and gameplay trailer, which both look incredible. Persona 5: The Phantom X revolves around an entirely new gang of characters and a new protagonist, however the original Phantom Thieves cast from Persona 5 did make a brief cameo in a screenshot posted directly from the announcement site.
Persona 5X will be a free-to-play title and will have in-app purchases, however, gamers shouldn’t be so dismayed yet by another mobile game spin-off for a quick cash grab of in-app purchases. The gameplay trailer that was released really gets the hopes up for many fans as the game looks near identical to Persona 5. The battles retain the same iconic animations like the screen announcing an all-out attack, pulling the masks off shadows while coming up for a sneak attack, and the results screen featuring the iconic red and black flair. There’s also the stylish palaces to explore and it seems mementos will be returning as well. Included in the gameplay trailer as well was the protagonist exploring a gorgeous Tokyo much like what we saw in the original Persona 5, going to the batting cages, fishing, answering questions in class, it’s all there. It’s truly stunning and to see it on a mobile device will be even more amazing. It’s unclear currently when it’ll be released, as for now it’s only available for those in China on March 29th.
There’s not much announced of the story currently, you’ll be playing as a brown-haired protagonist who of course gets to go to the Velvet Room and interact with Igor. The Morgana counterpart of this title is an owl named Luffy. One of the teammates is named Arai Suwa who is also a classmate of yours. Largely the game fits the identity of Persona 5 but it remains to be seen how the game will deviate in story, and importantly how monetization of the title will play out.
Persona 5 has seen a few other spin-off titles such as Persona 5 Strikers and Persona 5 Dancing in Starlight. The new mobile title will surely be a welcome game for every Persona fan.
