Activision Announces A Destiny Sequel Due 2017

There is finally a confirmation for a Destiny sequel in concrete writing. We might not have a month or date yet, but a vague promise of 2017 hangs in the air.

Released today via the fiscal 2015 fourth quarter report (which Activision was submitting to investors), the company lists its intention of creating a full sequel to Destiny in the publishing highlights section, stating:

Activision Publishing, along with its partners at Bungie, expects to bring a large new expansion to Destiny in 2016 and to release a full game sequel in 2017.

Alongside this announcement, we also received word of another large expansion to be released sometimes this year in 2016, leading up to the 2017 sequel.

Published in a duo effort from Activision and Bungie, the large MMO shooter game has taken its fair share of flak recently from fans. Projected DLCs for the game, as well as a mythic (now possibly very real) sequel, had not met the deadlines listed in the past. The mispredictions on the developer’s end did not sit well with their players. Fans grew more than a little restless, and didn’t take kindly to the broken promises.

Before publishing their sci-fi online experience, Bungie had previously put out the massively popular Halo games. After taking their leave from Microsoft, Bungie went on to create Destiny alongside Call of Duty funding machine, Activision.

Activision certainly looks to have their hands full this coming year, as their fiscal report also states the company’s intent to publish another Skylanders as well as (no surprise here) another Call of Duty. Meanwhile, Guitar Hero is left in the wayside as, according to Activision, the game saw “lower than expected” sales. So, sorry Guitar Hero stars and divas–no new game this year.

If the new expansion due out 2016 is in the same scope and vein as Taken King, fans can have a lot to look forward to. Hopefully it will also rake in enough revenue for the folks at Bungie to give fans an epic Destiny sequel.
