The 27th Annual D.I.C.E. Awards nominees were led by Marvel’s Spider-Man 2, Alan Wake II, Baldur’s Gate III, and COCCON. Following the event, Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 took home six awards, Outstanding Achievement in Animation, Outstanding Achievement in Character, Outstanding Achievement in Original Music Composition, Outstanding Achievement in Audio Design, Outstanding Technical Achievement as well as Action Game of the Year, the most out of any game this year. Followed close behind with five awards was Baldur’s Gate III, which is this year’s Game of The Year recipient, among other categories including Outstanding Achievement awards across Story, Game Direction, and Game Design, as well as Role-Playing Game of the Year.
This year’s Hall of Fame award went to legendary Japanese Composer and Sound Director, Koji Kondo, for his contributions to Nintendo over his 40-year career including the iconic Super Mario and The Legend of Zelda video game series. “I think the power of music plays a big role in making gaming memories last a long time,” Kondo said.
Last year, Kondo made history as the Super Mario Bros. “Ground Theme” was added to the National Recording Registry of the Library of Congress, the first and only piece of video game music in the registry as of now.
“The 27th Annual D.I.C.E. Awards are a testament to the talent and creativity of the interactive entertainment industry, gathering to honor the visionaries whose dedication, innovation, and passion have set new standards and brought us unforgettable gaming experiences,” stated Meggan Scavio, President of the Academy of Interactive Arts & Sciences. “From all of us at the Academy, and on behalf of your peers around the world, we extend our warmest congratulations to the outstanding 2023 nominees and winners for their remarkable contributions to the world of gaming.”
