Xbox Series X Showcase Event Reveals The Gunk

The Xbox Series X Showcase went live today and with it, a number of new games were revealed to be coming to the next generation console for Holiday 2020. One of those games is the upcoming adventure game The Gunk which is being developed by the studio behind SteamWorld, Image & Form. While the trailer doesn’t reveal much narrative-wise, it does show players a number of different settings that they will be able to experience in the game, as well as the titular Gunk that they will be encountering on this strange new world.

The trailer shows a spaceship landing on an unnamed planet, and then showing the at the moment unnamed main character setting foot on the planet. While not much is known about why she is there, it likely involves some form of surveillance, as can be seen from an unnamed character’s question to the main character “What we got? Another good for nothing space rock?” The trailer then shows a scene of the unnamed planet, covered in unknown flora and numerous coral-like formations. As the trailer progresses, gamers are given a look at the gunk that gives the game its name. While its function and makeup are at the moment unknown, based on the way the game shows the viscous liquid, it appears to have some sort of corruptive influence on the flora and fauna of the planet. This can be supported by a scene in the trailer when a strange frog-like being emerges from the gunk.

While the trailer doesn’t show the full scope of what the main character will be able to do, it does show that players use some sort of vacuum to clear away the gunk, which allows players to continue to explore the planet. It is likely that the main character will likely have more abilities, but at the moment it isn’t fully known what the main character is capable of.

The Gunk will be available on Xbox Series X, Xbox One, and PC, and the release date is currently unknown.
