Despite a recent hiccup with Xbox Live, Microsoft is doing pretty well with itself this year. At this year’s Gamescom, it was announced that the Xbox One X (the most powerful video game console, as Microsoft loves to say time and again) would have a “Project Scorpio Edition” available for preorder that weekend. In just half an hour, the entire pre-order inventory was sold out.
While Microsoft definitely knew they had a bestseller on their hands, they were shocked to see how quickly it sold out. Microsoft’s Head of Xbox Marketing Aaron Greenberg spoke with YouTube channel Rocket Beans TV at Gamescom, and had this to say about the sales:
We sold out at Amazon I think in twenty-five minutes. We expected our total inventory to last about a week and it sold out in less than a day,…
Selling out as quickly as it did is certainly impressive, but some information from Twitter puts it in an even bigger light. Video game industry analyst Daniel Ahmad posted some screenshots on Twitter of Amazon’s Best Sellers of 2017 (so far). Despite only being on sale for about half an hour, the Xbox One X has reached the 66th place on the list, having apparently already outsold the PS4 Pro’s (90th place) sales for this year.
Of course, this doesn’t necessarily mean Microsoft has won this year’s console war just yet. The year’s not over, and this holiday season will be sure to have all sorts of sales and bundle deals with Microsoft and Sony trying to one-up each other. There’s also the possibility that some people who pre-ordered the Xbox One X may change their minds and cancel their orders. If you’re really hurting for that “Project Scorpio Edition,” be sure to keep an eye on Amazon.
