Secret of Mana Remake Announced, Releases February 2018

Square Enix’s 1993 RPG, Secret of Mana, will be retold in 3D when the game’s remake hits PlayStation 4, PlayStation Vita and PC in February during its 25th anniversary.

The development company announced the remastered version and a Feb. 15 global digital release date earlier today, along with a trailer.

Secret of Mana, which originally released in August 1993, was on the Super Nintendo Entertainment System (SNES) months before 3D graphics were popularized by the first PlayStation’s Japanese launch in December 1994. Now, the RPG makes the jump to Sony’s platforms and PC with fully reworked graphics, voiced characters and a rerecorded soundtrack.

While the graphics are updated for modern expectations, Secret of Mana will retain the top-down gameplay angle from the SNES release.

Another returning feature is local multiplayer, which was first supported through the Super Multitap accessory for the SNES.

Rounding out the day’s announcement were preorder bonuses on both the PlayStation and Steam stores. For PlayStation users, preordering the game grants three PSN avatars (Randi, Primm, Popoi) and special Moogle (from the Final Fantasy series) and tiger costumes on launch day. Fans opting for the PC version through Steam will get the same costumes and a wallpaper.

Secret of Mana‘s plot follows Randi, who finds the Mana Sword, Primm, who aids Randi, and a sprite named Popoi. Together, the three set out to find eight elementals, fight evil and restore balance to their world.

Those seeking the game in its classic form can download Secret of Mana through Nintendo’s Virtual Console on Wii ($7.99, which can be played on Wii U via the console’s Wii emulator), Google Play ($8.99) and Apple’s App Store ($7.99).

Despite the original releasing for a Nintendo console, the 2018 version will not be available on the Switch. Nintendo Switch owners must import the Japan-exclusive Seiken Densetsu Collection, which includes the first three Mana games in their original versions, if they want the game on their console.

Secret of Mana releases Feb. 15 on the PlayStation Store for PS4 and PS Vita and on Steam for PC.
