The Virtual Reality (VR) classic Superhypecube is back, this time with a remaster for PlayStation VR2. The original Superhypecube was released alongside the first PlayStation VR console on October 13, 2016. Described as a “retro-futuristic spatial reasoning puzzle game,” players are given the ability to “fly through endless waves of abstract geometry in the warm analog glow of virtual neon.”
While coasting through these waves, players must “use the power of VR to lean left and right” in order to locate the gap between various shapes and “quickly determine what rotations to make.” Though this is an optional mechanics, players are challenged to time their “power-ups just right.” All of these things allow them to “stay alive as long as possible.” Much like the vintage arcade games of the 1980s and 90s that Superhypecube draws inspiration from, there is a leaderboard. This leaderboard is international, and demonstrates that the game is home to “a simple concept that tests [player] reflexes, calling[them] to pick it up again and again.”
The PlayStation VR2 officially came out in February of 2023, so this is not another side by side release. Instead, Kokoromi, the development team behind this game, prides itself on the self proclaimed fact that, “Ten years on, Superhypecube VR still defines spatial arcade action.” Even so, a remake would not be a remake without some sort of change, and a ten year old game is likely to require heavy maintenance.
