Upcoming Call of Duty Game Set During World War 2

There has been a rumor going around that the new Call of Duty game will be set during World War 2. The rumor started in early March when YouTube channel The Family Video Games supposedly leaked images that showed World War 2-themed box art. Not only did GameSpot know about the rumor, Eurogamer collaborated with the finding, saying that “sources have confirmed” that the game will be called WWII.

The Family Video Games video mentioned above can be viewed below:

Activision COO Thomas Tippl said that setting the popular first-person shooter in WWII will bring the game back to its roots; all of the games prior to Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare were set during WWII.

“In 2017, Activision will take Call of Duty back to its roots and traditional combat will once again take center stage,” Tippl said. “This is what our dedicated community of Call of Duty players and Sledgehammer Games, which has been developing this year’s title, are the most excited about.”

The decision to move the series back to WWII may have been based on the fact that Call of Duty: Infinite Warfare had lower-than-expected sales despite being one of the games in arguably the most popular first-person shooter in recent history, right behind the Halo series.

Tippl suggested that the reason that Infinite Warfare didn’t sell as well was because the setting of the game wasn’t ideal.

“It’s clear that, for a portion of our audience, the space setting just didn’t resonate,” Tippl explained. “We have a passionate, experienced studio deeply committed to this direction, and despite the risks we saw, we believe it is important to consider the passions of our game teams in deciding what content to create.”

As this is still just “confirmed” rumor, there is no release date for the game, nor has the platforms for the game been decided.
