Until Dawn and The Dark Pictures Developer Has Been Acquired by Nordisk Games

The developer of Until Dawn, The Dark Pictures Anthology, and The Quarry has a new parent company. Announced by Supermassive Games, the studio has officially announced that they’ve been acquired by Nordisk Games, which itself is subsidiary of Nordisk Film. The Copenhagen based company initially acquired a minority stake in the studio back in November 2021, opting to go all the way and completely buy out all of the stocks in the studio, giving them full ownership. The terms of the acquisition were not disclosed, but Nordisk has now gained some cinematic-type titles under their umbrella.

Supermassive Games CEO and Founder Pete Samuels expressed that Supermassive and Nordisk share the same sentiment on growing new IP’s as well as expanding the product. “We have found that we share a lot of important values with Mikkel [Nordisk CEO] and his team, and we believe these values to be equally important to our existing commercial partners who we will continue to support.” This newest of many studios that Nordisk has purchased a stake in, which includes Just Cause and Mad Max developer Avalanche Studios and Metroid: Samus Returns developer MercurySteam, with a full ownership and part ownership respectively.

Supermassive Games themselves have been on quite the journey to get to this point. After starting out as Sony’s go-to for handheld and family oriented titles on the PlayStation brand, the studio broke through the mainstream with their critically acclaimed horror/supernatural thriller Until Dawn in 2015. The game had an indelible impact as Supermassive changed course and went all in on the genre, developing and releasing The Dark Pictures Anthology, which is a collection of dramatic horror survival titles that are still being released as we speak. They also just released The Quarry, a spiritual successor to Until Dawn, and mostly inspired by the slasher films of the 1980’s.
