After the brilliant ending to treasure hunter Nathan Drake’s story in last year’s Uncharted 4: A Thief’s End, some fans were surprised to hear developer Naughty Dog was actually working on another game in the series. Fans were initially skeptical about a spin-off game without the series’ central wise-cracking adventurer, but that skepticism disappeared when it was heard that fan favorite Chloe Frazer would take center stage in Uncharted: The Lost Legacy.
The game will be released in just a few more days, but critics’ reviews are already coming in, and so far, they’ve been singing nothing but praises. The Lost Legacy currently has a Metacritic score of 85, based on 56 reviews from trusted video game publishers. Of those 56, an astounding 51 were rated positive and only five were considered “mixed.” So far, not a single negative review has come forth.
The Lost Legacy has received four 100 scores. One of those comes from the site “God is Geek,” who express hope in their review that this game will be the start of a brand new chapter in the Uncharted franchise.
Many more of the reviews sit in the 90s. GameSpot said in their review that though the game may have rough start, “it grows into a more nuanced, clever experience, ranking among the best in the series.” PlayStation Lifestyle said in their review that though The Lost Legacy may be shorter than the main entries in the series, “that doesn’t mean the key components that constitute an Uncharted game aren’t just as present.”
Polygon and EGM’s reviews both score at 85. Polygon said this new game, “offers glimpse into what the franchise could become in the future,” suggesting a new developer should take over the series. EGM stated that though the game is more of the same, it still sets the stage for some of “the best action gameplay out there.”
IGN gave the game a 75, stating that though the protagonists Chloe and Nadine keep things interesting, the game is still filled with “overly familiar action sequences” and a “disappointingly empty open-world area.”
The five mixed reviews seem to agree that, though the game looks great and the characters are perfect, the game overall doesn’t leave as much of an impact as the original entries did. That might have something to do with the game’s short length.
Uncharted: The Lost Legacy is available on August 22nd for the PlayStation 4.
