It looks like Treyarch isn’t done with the teases for their upcoming title Call of Duty Black Ops: Cold War. After confirming the official title and setting earlier this week, the studio then tweeted out what looks to be some sort of key art, or possibly the box art for the title. The art piece appears to be following the motif that was set by the earlier teases that the company put out, as well as the teaser trailer that was uploaded a couple of days prior.
As you can see, there’s a lot to take in here. This is arguably the most colorful art promo piece that any of the Call of Duty studios have ever shown us, as the standard style and aesthetic are usually only a handful of colors and settings. Here we have a collision of two soldiers pieced together to look like one person, in this case, an American and Soviet soldier. On the left depicts the Soviet side, complete with sickle and hammer flag of the Soviet Union, numerous CCCP markings which were the Russian abbreviation for the USSR (Union of Soviet Socialist Republics), and sunglasses with missiles on them. To the right is the American aspect, which is packaged with colors of from the flag in several separate pieces as well as a Bald Eagle readying to take its prey. The propaganda piece on the top right says in clear view “Caught Red Handed” which is a reference to the Soviet Union’s Communist Party as red tends to be the predominant color used throughout their history.
Everything in this key art is a complete representation of the Cold War, a proxy battle of information, suspense, fear, intimidation, and subterfuge type tactics. All of these themes are what Treyarch appears to be building the title around, which only begs more questions than answers. How this will fit into the main campaign, multiplayer, and possibly other modes is anyone’s guess. Either way, we’ll find out very soon what the studio has been working on as the worldwide reveal is set for next week on August 26.
