The Witcher 3 Has Officially Sold Over 50 Million Copies

Recently on twitter, Polish video game developer CD Projekt Red announced that The Witcher 3: The Wild Hunt has sold over 50 million copies. According to Forbes, The Witcher 3: The Wild Hunt reached this milestone just eight years after its initial release in 2015, making it one of the top-selling video games of all time.

To go a bit more in depth on how impressive this is, IGN updated an article as recently as May 9, 2023, updating the best selling video games of all time. The Witcher 3: The Wild Hunt was the 13th highest grossing video game before this update was even announced. Assuming the other numbers remained similar, the announcement that The Witcher 3: The Wild Hunt has sold over 50 million copies would make it the 8th highest grossing video game of all time.

Along with the initial tweet, CD Projekt Red made a follow-up tweet shortly after showing that all three of The Witcher games have sold more than 75 million copies combined. This number demonstrates how much more impressive The Witcher 3: The Wild Hunt’s numbers are, since the third game alone sold close to double what the first two made combined.

Even beyond just the third game, the success of the franchise as a whole is undeniable. The Witcher Netflix show has been hit that will premiere its third season this June. On top of this success, according to hypebeast, Netflix’s The Witcher has also already been renewed through season 5. Additionally, Gamesradar notes that The Witcher 4 is in development right now, even though the process has been relatively quiet. While the franchise has been booming as of late, these numbers only solidify what fans already know of the juggernaut franchise, demonstrating that there will be more to come in the future.

Alex Balderston: I am a news writer with a love of all things video games. My dad got me into video games at four years old with Backyard Baseball and since then I have been hooked. I have a sweet spot for Nintendo games, however I am always looking for the new games to spark my interest.
