The Raging Demon Akuma is Finally Teased for Street Fighter 6

The months roll on by and it looks like Capcom isn’t missing a step. Their Capcom Highlights event yesterday covered some good new information covering some of their games but the most impactful is likely the teaser trailer for the fourth DLC character for Street Fighter 6’s first season: Akuma.

The iconic Akuma is sporting a new look, no doubt many are relieved that he’s evolved from the poodle top knot look he donned in Street Fighter 5. This new Akuma looks angrier, older, and hairier above all things. In true, overdramatic Akuma fashion, he spends his spare time punching angry deva statues in the middle of an active volcano, which is presumably Akuma’s new stage, until the statue literally crumbles under the weight of his punches.

Interestingly, this isn’t the first time the volcano stage has been associated with Akuma, as way back in Street Fighter 4 Akuma and Ryu had a clash at the Volcanic Rim stage, and I wouldn’t be surprised if this stage is a callback to said Street Fighter 4 stage in the same way that Ed’s Ruined Lab stage is a reference to Street Fighter 4’s Crumbling and Secret Laboratories. Speaking of Ryu, you can see flashes of Ryu in Akuma’s trailer, so no doubt there’s still a friendly sparring match Akuma is going to be pursuing in Street Fighter 6’s World Tour.

The subject of World Tour is a funny one too, as this is the only character teaser so far that does no feature the player Avatar, likely due to how it would ruin the tone of Akuma’s reveal.

With Ed having just released, it’s likely we won’t actually be seeing Akuma for a few months, possibly until the end of spring. However, there was only a two month gap between Rashid and AKI, it’s entirely within reason to expect Akuma to not be far behind Ed. Hopefully, we’ll be seeing our favorite Raging Demon before EVO in July.
