After being delayed in February due to concerns of the coronavirus, developer Obsidian has announced that The Outer Worlds will be launching for the Nintendo Switch later this year. The game will now have the release date of June 5, few months later than the originally planned March 6 date. This includes both the digital and the physical version of the game, albeit with the latter requiring a “day one patch that could be up to 6 GB” as it was stated by the developer.
According to Obsidian, the patch will improve upon numerous features. This includes optimizing gameplay, additional high-resolution textures, and other fixes on potential bugs that could hurt the overall game. The Outer Worlds is already massive game, so we’re interested to see what the company has done to make the title playable on the Switch.
The Outer Worlds initially launched in 2019 for the PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and PC where it was generally well-received. The game was compared favorably to Obsidian’s other well-known project, Fallout New Vegas, which was made in conjunction with Bethesda. Some fans and critics still consider that entry in the Fallout franchise to be one of the best.
The coronavirus has unfortunately had a worldwide impact on the video game community in general. Perhaps the most debilitating of these effects was the complete cancellation of this year’s E3, as well as other conventions that were supposed to take place before and after. Therefore, it’s great to see the game escape it’s an indefinite delay on the Switch, giving us a small glimmer of hope that other companies will eventually be able to resume work at some point.
The Outer Worlds will officially launch for the Nintendo Switch on June 5, 2020. It’s also available right now for the PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and PC.
