Just yesterday, it was revealed that The Outer Worlds will be heading to a new platform. The upcoming Sci-Fi roleplaying game is getting a port for the Nintendo Switch. Instead of being handled by developer Obsidian, the project is being worked on by Virtuous, the same group that created ports for Dark Souls and L.A. Noire for the Switch.
Virtuous is a game developer company based in Singapore. They also provide digital entertainment production services for both the video game and movie industries. They have co-developed games for several platforms, including the PlayStation 4, the Xbox One, and the Nintendo Switch. Gamers may be familiar with some of their work, as they have co-developed famous titles such as Final Fantasy XII: The Zodiac Age, Batman: Return to Arkham, and many more.
For those who don’t know, The Outer Worlds is a sci-fi game being developed by Obsidian Entertainment and published by Private Division. The game takes place in an alternative timeline in which US President McKinley wasn’t assassinated and so Theodore Roosevelt was never elected president ,and as a result of that, large business trusts never broke up, creating a hyper-corporatist and extremely classist society in which the world is controlled by what are called Mega Corporations and the robber barons of the Industrial Era. The game takes place on the colony planet Halcyon and follows the player as they travel through Halcyon making allies and enemies.
The game has a branching story in which the player’s choices affect the outcome of the game as well as the allies that they can obtain and keep. The game has several interesting features, the first being tactical time dilation, which allows the player to slow down time for a limited amount of time while they fight enemies, the game also has several factions that the player can join, each of them vying for power and dominion of Halcyon. The game includes a leveling system that caps at 30 and three skill branches. The game will also allow the player to have two companions with them at one time. One of our writers who went to E3 actually got to play a demo of the game.
The Outer Worlds is set to release October 25th, 2019 for Xbox One, PlayStation 4, and Microsoft Windows. The release date for the Nintendo Switch has yet to be announced, it is safe to assume that this means that the port will come at a later time. Not much else is known at this time but one can hope that The Outer Worlds will prove to be an out-of-this world gaming experience.
