It’s hot. Like, really hot. The summer likes to bring in waves of heat, and sometimes it’s better to hunker down inside where there might be a cool basement, or an air-conditioned room. And with that hunkering down, it’s best to keep yourself occupied. Which is why another Top 10 Mobile Games List has arrived, for July of course. And this one, while it won’t get rid of the heat outside, it can hopefully bring some fun for when you’re trying to cool off. And to start off Top 10 Mobile Games of July 2019, is a game that takes place outside:
#10. Timber Roller
Does anyone actually rollerblade anymore? Mine are still hanging since 2003. Pretty sure I outgrew them. Well, in Timber Roller the love for roller blading returns in this littler arcade-style game. Make your way down a path, collecting coins and dodging several obstacles. The more you switch between feet, the faster you get. Collect the letters that spell TIMBER, and you are now essentially a one-man roller blading machine and can knock down anything and everything in your path. Including rocks. With different locations, and a plethora of different characters, it’s got a good sense of variety for a good time.

#9. Flashback Mobile
To get the easy and terrible joke out of the way, it’s time to flashback to the mid-90’s. Flashback was a 1992 CD-ROM game that had taken a sci-fi twist on the 1989 classic Prince of Persia. Die? No worries, just turn back the time to a point where you weren’t dead. Don’t really remember who you are? No worries, just find the holocube with a message left behind by yourself and start to pick up the trail you left off and piecing things together.
This version is Flashback Mobile, the HD-version of the original ‘92 game that was released in 2013. But now, at your fingertips. It follows the same story, and you can choose between the classic style (controls, sounds, music, etc) or the updated version depending on what mood you’re in.

#8. Sticky Bodies
This game is… surreal to say the least. Sticky Bodies does advertise it as a strange and surreal world with adventures across real locations in the UK. But how surreal, you may ask? Well, the game starts off with a giant hand pinching a man’s shoulders and then proceeding to drop him. From there, you control the falling person and find other people (who are also falling) and linking arms with them. Collect falling food, falling coins, and try to get a high score. And the best way to may the high score even higher? Make sure to knock off the glasses of the giant face that is about to eat you, who has been waiting for you at the bottom of the level. That surreal. Needless to say, the simple gameplay and extremely weird scenario got me hooked.

#7. Elune
It’s time for an adventure! Elune follows the story of a young trio who are able to travel through different dimensions. They’re put on a quest to retrieve the shards of darkness that have been scattered through several dimensions, so they can put a stop to the evil plans of the Dark Lord. With their mentors lost, they need to team up with newcomers and fight several monsters to save the world. Set up like a JRPG, the characters talk and then do battle in different stages all the way up to the final boss, which gives them a shard. Fun, colorful, with some strategy on the side, it’s a grand adventure waiting to be had.

#6. The Mighty Quest for Epic Loot
Having covered the release of The Mighty Quest for Epic Loot already, and having spent many hours getting some great loot, it’s not shocking that this has made an appearance on the list. Because everyone knows, the best part of the adventure is the really cool loot that you can get from doing it. And that’s what this game centers around. With some fun wit, some simple gameplay, and some top tier loot, this is well worth all the battles to get to the real prize. More loot!

#5. Doom II
Much like Flashback, Doom II is another great 90’s cult classic. From 1995, Doom has been the series to be known as one of the coolest looking FPS games. Not just because of the awesome monsters from Hell that try to kill you, but because it was well ahead of it’s time for graphics. Combing the 3D world with 2D monsters and stats, that creating a unique and memorable visual and aesthetic. And now it’s on mobile. And you can bet that shooting up the monsters and demons from Hell is just as exciting as it was the first time.

#4. Hyper Light Drifter
Another game that was covered before when it was coming to iOS. And, it’s still just as mysterious and wonderful as it is on PC. Hyper Light Drifter tells the story of a drifter, who collects lost technology and ancient relics to preserve them. But a mysterious illness plagues this drifter, and you need to find a way to either maintain or cure it while dealing with the violent world around you. Critically acclaimed, this isn’t one to miss.

#3. Do Not Feed the Monkeys
Careful. They’re listening. Or maybe, we’re the ones that are listening. In Do Not Feed the Monkeys, players join what is essentially the Illuminati (called the Primate Observation Club), and are tasked by watching the livelihoods of a few monkeys. However, these ‘monkeys’ aren’t actually the primates that the game wants you to believe, they’re people. And you’re tapping into their livelihood and keeping tabs on them. But it goes beyond just keeping tabs. Soon you have to start making some serious choices: be a good worker bee and follow orders, and get paid a great salary to live, or realize that you can help these people from where you’re sitting. A story of surveillance and scruples, it makes you question your choices and the people around you.

#2. Worse Than Death
It’s time to get a little spooky. Worse Than Death is the second title from Benjamin Rivers (the mind behind the pixelated horror game Home). It takes the same side-scrolling adventure, but it’s been updated and enhanced with a unique aesthetic. Players become Holly, returning to her hometown for a highschool reunion. However, things go wrong when she comes across a gruesome death of a classmate and an evil other-worldly force is coming after her and her best friend Flynn.
Worse Than Death plays as a side-scroller, where your only options are to hide or run from the monster that’s following you. Make too much noise and you’ll need to flee or hide because the monster will be coming towards you. As you dodge and hide, you begin to uncover secret truths about the town, your friends, and yourself. Make it out alive with more questions than answers, or figure out the mystery.

#1. Sky: Children of the Light
It’s no secret that I’ve talked about thatgamecompany’s critically acclaimed Journey in a lot of different ways. To this day it is still deemed as one of the best games, and is considered a classic. So when they had announced their upcoming title Sky back in 2017, it was a big deal. Thatgamcompany is masterful in their visual storytelling, and there was high hopes for this. Two years in the making, Sky turned into Sky: Children of the Light, and finally came out. And it was well worth the wait.
Sky: Children of the Light has a sense of vastness to it. Where there are several worlds that are all connected through a large starry cloud structure. Players take on the role of a child of light, restorers in these forgotten lands. They bring back the history and keep it revived with their powers. And from them, they can learn certain emotions and poses to communicate with others. As Sky is a multiplayer game, and requires other people to get through certain areas. So team up with friends, or match with strangers to restore the worlds as they once were.
With whimsy, wonder, and a whole lot of imagination, Sky: Children of the Light arrive to light up everyone’s world with its story and locations. Which is why it is the number one most recommended mobile game of July 2019.
