One of the most celebrated aspects of action-platformer games is the ability to weave platforming into the combat during traversal and boss encounters. In rare cases, the reverse is also reflected in the design with combat having an impact on how players traverse the map. This is the case with the upcoming 2D action-platformer Untarctica. Developed by Dog Temaki and published by Actsan Games, the game recently received an official trailer showing off the chaotic combat and the way that fighting back can affect the player’s movement.
The new trailer for Untarctica starts with a hectic battle against a boss called Sentinel. The boss produces wave after wave of projectiles that force the player to jump between different elevations to stay safe while continuing to fire to deal damage. From there, the other kinds of danger present in the game reveal themselves along with unique tool players have to contend with them, their weapon’s recoil. In order to quickly dash in the air or between obstacles, players will be able to fire attacks that carry them away, a skill made even more important to master in combat where the attacks sent out can damage foes.
According to the Steam store page, the game takes place in an abandoned research station deep in Antarctica, now overrun by experiments gone wrong. The trailer shows off some of these experiments such as a massive worm and a robotic spider with a human head. Players are encouraged to venture into the heart of the station to discover the truth behind the military experiments that created the mutants and destroy it.
Untarctica promises to reward mastery over both the combat and platforming aspects of its gameplay by having each influence the other. It is set to be released on PC with the release date to be announced.
