Developer Naughty Dog’s critically acclaimed survival horror game The Last of Us could be making its way to the PS4 this summer if reports from a Sony executive are true. PlayStation’s Eurasian Software Market Manager Sercan Sulun revealed as much in a video interview on a Turkish CNN program yesterday.
Translated by IGN, Sulun made the following comment when asked about a sequel to last summer’s hit by the CNN Turk TV presenter. “There is no information about a new The Last of Us game but I can share this knowledge; as of this summer, The Last of Us will be on the PS4. Both on PSN and physically.”
EDIT: A banner ad for The Last of Us: Remastered has shown up on the Sony Entertainment Online store today. Clicking on the ad brings up a “page not found” error, so the announcement may have been a bit early, but it looks like PS4 gamers will be getting the game sometime soon.
In addition to revealing the move to PS4, Sulun mentioned that the “PS4 version will also include the DLC so you will be able to play ‘Left Behind’ as well.”
A representative for Sony Computer Entertainment Europe responded to an inquiry by Joystiq and has stated the following: “At no time have we announced that The Last of Us is coming to PS4 and therefore, have nothing to say on the subject.”
This isn’t the first discussion about The Last of Us making an appearance on the PS4. “We have such limited resources, and it’s a question of where you put the resources,” Naughty Dog writer and creative director Neil Druckmann said in an interview with Eurogamer in February on the possibility of a PS4 port. “It’s something where we can have a feel of where the demand is, and where our time is best spent. It’s something that we’ll figure out as we move forward.”
Whether or not The Last of Us will hit PS4 this summer remains to be seen, but it’s probably safe to say that if it does, it would be very welcome news to gamers, especially new PS4 owners looking for blockbuster first-party titles.
For those not familiar, The Last of Us is an action-adventure survival horror game set in a post-apocalyptic United States in the year 2033. Gamers assume the control of Joel as he escorts another character, a young girl named Ellie, through dangerous encounters with fungal-infected mutants and vicious human survivors as they themselves try to survive.
The game has won many awards and gained high critical acclaim following its release in June of 2013, including perfect review scores from IGN, Eurogamer, Edge, Destructoid, Machinma Gaming Daily and more. Just a few weeks ago, the game surpassed 6 million copies sold worldwide and was announced it would be getting film adaptation.
