The Game Awards Nominees have been Revealed

The fifth annual edition of The Game Awards is less than a month away. Today, the event’s creator and host, Geoff Keighley took to YouTube to unveil the nominations across 29 different categories. This year’s leader in nominations is Hideo Kojima’s newest game Death Stranding which was nominated in eight different categories. Right behind it is Remedy’s Control which was nominated in seven different categories.

Both Death Stranding and Control were nominated across seven of the same categories including Best Game Direction, Best Narrative, Best Audio Design, Best Art Direction, Best Performance, Best Action/Adventure Game and the coveted Game of the Year. In the Best Performance category, both games had two actors nominated with Norman Reedus and Mads Mikkelsen for Death Stranding and Courtney Hope and Matthew Porretta for Control.

Death Stranding and Control aren’t the only games nominated for this year’s biggest award as four other game are vying for the coveted Game of the Year award including the remake of Resident Evil 2, The Outer Worlds, Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice, and Super Smash Bros. Ultimate. These other four games were met with critical and commercial success upon release, thus, making this year’s fight for Game of the Year a slugfest.

Elsewhere, multiple games were nominated in at least three other categories. Those games include: Apex Legends, Call of Duty: Modern Warfare, Disco Elysium, Final Fantasy XIV, Fortnite, Gris, Outer Wilds, and Sayonara Wild Hearts. There is also a brand new category for fresh indie game, AKA Best Debut Indie Game, which features ZA/UM for Disco Elysium, House House for Untitled Goose Game, Nomada Studios for Gris, Deadtoast Entertainment for My Friend Pedro, Mobius Digital for Outer Wilds, and Mega Crit for Slay the Spire.

Zachary Dalton: I have a major passion for video games, the stories they tell, and writing about them. Avid believer that video games present the best storytelling opportunities out of any media, and that needs to be conveyed. Former competitive Pokemon player. Attended university to study game development. Wouldn't be who I am today without games.
