Tales games have become quite popular in the RPG scene thanks to the trademark title, the interesting stories they tell, and the unique combat system the games utilize. Tales of Arise is the newest upcoming Tales game and TGS 2019 revealed a nice slice of story content and gameplay giving fans a nice idea of what to expect.
The trailer begins with our two main protagonists. We found from our first trailer they are both from different worlds but fate brings them together. In the new trailer, we learn more as to why these two are undeniably a good pair. It seems that the male protagonist is numb to pain but not immune to death. He wields a searing blade that burns him every time but we learn his female partner Shione, has the ability to heal him. Shione also has some kind of affliction as she causes pain to everyone who touches her. This gives a good reason as to why these two have been brought together in the story. What the interesting duo seems to be trying to accomplish is not yet certain.
The TGS trailer also gives a nice glimpse this time of the combat in Tales of Arise. Like most Tales games, the combat is real-time. Although this time, the camera seems to be set behind the character rather than from the flank like a fighting game. This will likely change the button commands that are used to perform special attacks like previous games. Judging by the fast past action that was shown, it won’t be a problem to utilize. We see the Unreal Engine 4 in full force during the combat sequence as the character charges an enemy with a flurry of slashes then at one point embues his sword with flame, which causes the grass around him to get a seared touch. All of which is looking very impressive and pretty on the new engine.
Tales fans seem to be excited to see the next evolution of the genre and Tales of Arise is looking to deliver. No word yet on the release date but Tales of Arise will be playable on PS4, Xbox One, and PC at some point next year.
