Tesla Works On Integrating Steam In Vehicles

In a recent tweet, Tesla CEO Elon Musk mentioned that the company is making progress with integrating Valve’s Steam gaming platform into the in-car consoles. In other words, gaming on the go has reached a whole new level! A possible demo will be available next month according to Musk.

Incorporating video games in electric cars is not unfamiliar territory for this automotive company. Tesla already offers a selection of free-to-play games from its own library known as Tesla Arcade. Some of these games include Atari classics like Missile Command and Super Breakout, as well as popular titles such as Sonic the Hedgehog and Stardew Valley. With the inclusion of Steam, the selection of playable games would greatly expand. Tesla owners would also have access to their existing Steam library, with the possibility of purchasing new games directly through their vehicles.

Though impressive, Tesla’s collection is currently restricted to games that require less processing power. When Cuphead was implemented in 2019, only a shortened version with limited content was available to play. Furthermore, the Steam library itself consists of over 50,000 games; Tesla may find it difficult to try them all on car. Musk has previously shown off the capabilities of the Model S by running Cyberpunk 2077 at 60 frames per second, so the addition of other graphically advanced games is likely.

Some consumers may be concerned about the ability to play video games while in a vehicle, seeing this as a distraction to drivers. A feature known as Passenger Play once allowed passengers to play games while the car was in motion. After an investigation by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), the feature was disabled by Tesla. Even though Passenger Play is no longer accessible, a built-in arcade would make a good pastime while stopping on a road trip or waiting for a friend.

At this time, it is unknown whether the upcoming Steam feature will apply to all of Tesla’s vehicles or just the Model S and Model X vehicles.
