There appears to be a bit of trouble in the walls of Bandai Namco. Months after the arguable face of Tekken Katsuhiro Harada announces his departure from the Tekken team, as well as Bandai Namco in general, the Tekken fanbase is hit with the departure of his specially picked successor and Tekken 8 game director, Kohei Ikeda also known as Nakatsu.

This is quite the shock. While Tekken 8 is no one’s favorite Tekken game, the expectation was that it had done well enough financially that it could weather the storm of its harsh critical reception, but it seems that that isn’t the case. The resignation of Ikeda specifically seems to stem from the promises that Tekken 8’s third season would have a redemption of sorts, especially after Ikeda himself took to Twitter to publicly apologize after the state of the game’s second season, and swore to improve upon the game in the future.

As you can tell, that redemption didn’t happen and now Tekken is left floundering in the wind. Ikeda has been working on Tekken since Tekken Tag Tournament 2, another pretty contentious title among the Tekken diehards, but it’s never been this dire. Now Bandai Namco have lost both Harada and Ikeda, and now the community is wondering who is left on the Tekken team to lead Tekken 8 into the later stages of its lifespan and into the next potential Tekken title.
Tekken is one of the cornerstones of the fighting game genre, to see it go through such a harsh reception is worrying for lovers of the series, especially since contenders for the title of go-to 3D fighting game are on the horizon, such as Sega’s Virtua Fighter 6. We can only wait for updates on the Tekken team, whether longtime Tekken designer Michael Murray will step into the Director position Ikeda leaves behind or another face will lead the development of the series, only time will tell.
