It’s been six years since Tekken 7 was released on PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and Windows. A new Tekken installment was announced during EVO 2022, with it being confirmed as Tekken 8 at State of Play September 2022. Along with gameplay reveal at the recent Game Awards, more information about the upcoming game has been revealed.
Tekken producer Katsuhiro Harada and Tekken game designer Michael Murray revealed more details about Tekken 8 during a recent IGN interview. The interview was held at a Tekken 8 premiere event in Los Angeles. Harada elaborated on Tekken 8’s new features through Murray’s English translations.
One of the things Harada and Murray talked about was Tekken 8‘s new heat system. On the system’s concept, Murray said, “The heat system is a nice package and a nice ring to it by itself, and it affects the whole game just from as a system standpoint; but what’s cool about it is how each of these individual characteristics is different depending on the character when they’re in the heat state.”
Harada and Murray also discussed Tekken 8‘s new special control scheme’s flexibility. Murray said, “When we were thinking about this [system] and how we wanted to change it, it was more about, well, it’s kind of like a missed opportunity if it’s just geared towards the beginners, right? If it were something that would benefit intermediate and advanced players, it would be much better for us.”
The two developers touched upon the return of character customization from Tekken 7. While not revealing much, Murray explained, “Tekken has always been known for, even within fighting games, […] a lot of freedom that the players have in customizing most of their characters…It’s like you can change all these different parts in so many different ways and that was the case for Tekken 7, so obviously we’d want to do even more for Tekken 8.”
Tekken 8 is set to release for the PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, and Windows. Additional information is soon to be confirmed.
