Sumo Digital Acquires CCP Games Studio

U.K. developer Sumo Digital has now officially acquired CCP Games’ Newcastle studio. The studio has previously worked on EVE Online as well as EVE: Valkyrie. According to an official announcement, CCP Newcastle will be Sumo Digital’s existing studios located in Sheffield and Nottingham, U.K, and Pune, India. Sumo Digital has worked on quite a few notable titles in the past such as HitmanSnake PassLittleBigPlanet 3, and Forza Motorsport 7.

The studio’s most recent projects are Crackdown 3 and Dead Island 2, which are currently in the works. Howeverwithin the announcement of the acquisition of the studio, the developer didn’t give word on what Newcastle would be working on.

The only input they gave on the matter was that this addition would “extend Sumo’s capacity and breadth of experience.” On the other end of the acquisition, CCP Studios announced back in October of 2017 that they would be closing as well as merging certain studios together. This development was a result of reduced investment in virtual reality titles.

The new Sumo Digital Newcastle studio will have the entire staff of 34 employees from the CCP studio and will be headed by former CCP Newcastle studio head and executive producer of EVE: Valkyrie, Owen O’Brien. Hilmar Veigar Pétursson, CEO of CCP Games, stated that ”Sumo Digital is a great home for the team in Newcastle. As we say goodbye to our former colleagues we know that they will do great things there, and we can’t wait to see what they do next.”
