At Summer Games Fest, we got to go hands-on with the upcoming dark fantasy RPG Mistfall Hunter. However, this isn’t your typical dark fantasy RPG. This game is a dark fantasy RPG, but it is also an extraction game. This is a unique take on the genre as you typical only see shooters fall into the extraction game space. However, this unique approach is sure to give the game a leg up as something different as the genre gains more and more popularity.
The goal of Mistfall Hunter is to go into the map and collect resources while battling it out with other players and NPCs on an ever shrinking map and escape with your treasures and loot before other players can come take it from you. This is important as the only way to extract in the game is by taking out a small little creature known as a Returner Woodling that once killed will drop an item called “Soul of Return that will allow you to extract. However, extracting in this game is the loudest and most noticeable thing in the game as you ring the loudest bell possible which is just a calling for other teams to come take you out before you can leave.
The game features both a solo and trios queue for players to join. The trios queue will consist of five teams, meaning fifteen players total, engaging in near constant action as the map we played on didn’t look too big. Players will also get to choose between one of the six classes upon queuing up for the game. Each class has their own unique powers and abilities, and the developers stated more classes will be coming to the game after in launches. Players who get good (or think they are) enough will also be able to jump into the trios queue as a solo player and take on teams as a loner.
Mistfall Hunter is set to release at some point later this year for those who want to to experience the extraction genre, but may not be the biggest fan of shooters.
