Steam Patch Accidentally Deletes Dark Phoenix from Ultimate Marvel vs. Capcom 3

In something many people weren’t expecting, Capcom’s 2011 fighting game classic Ultimate Marvel vs. Capcom 3 received a patch on Steam over this past weekend.

An odd occurrence for a 15 year old fighting game but not unheard of for even ancient games like this to occasionally receive touch-up patches. However, this particular patch seems to have broken quite a few things in its installation, including mods (a big deal in a game with years worth of fan content) and a few things in the base game.

These are some pretty big changes, the Kubota Escape is a technique from the game’s birth where you tag to a dead character, the game doesn’t register it, and the character you were previously playing as tags in. Mainly it was used in obscure situations where you’d want to avoid something obnoxious in neutral such as Dr. Doom’s “follow my lead” team super mixups, but it was still an intricate and very valid part of the game. However, all attention will probably be on that last point there.

Phoenix is a bit of a meme in the Marvel vs. Capcom community because of how broken and easy she is to play. If Phoenix is on a team the entire match warps around her presence; if you have 5 super meters stocked and Phoenix dies she’ll revive at full health as Dark Phoenix, the strongest character in the game with the slight downside of having constantly draining low health. A downside that means nothing when she deals millions of damage in seconds and mixes you up in 4 different directions at once. The new patch seems to have written out the “reviving at full health at 5 meters” part and now Phoenix is just a (very solid still) low health fly character. Current theories suggest it happened due to a typo in the code.

I’m sure people are out there celebrating that she’s unusable for the time being, but Phoenix has been a competitive staple in the game for 15 years now, and many are calling the PC port of Ultimate Marvel vs. Capcom unplayable right now which is fair. I’m sure there will be a patch to follow up the current one, and restore Phoenix to her former infamy.
