Star Control II’s Successor Might Finally be on the Horizon

Star Control II is one of the greatest games of all time, according to many lists over the years including the likes of IGN and GameSpot. Fans of the 1992 classic will finally be able to experience sequel even if it won’t be under the Star Control title. Free Stars: Children of Infinity is an upcoming, open-world, space game that encourages players to interact with different planets and alien species, and engage in space-faring combat. The game recently released its first look trailer.

The game seems to operate with a top-down design for space travel and movement, and having communication with different individuals happening in a first-person simulator style. These interactions come with different dialogue options to affect the outcome of possible negotiations. It might call to mind the Mass Effect series, which wouldn’t be inaccurate. Mass Effect’s Mako has even been cited as the most overt homage to Star Control II and its legacy beyond the two series’ shared genre.

Luckily, it seems Free Stars: Children of Infinity will give players the chance to return to a world that hasn’t been explored by the same developers since 1992. The Kickstarter campaign, which has since reached $190,000, is definitely having a pretty successful first few days. Seems like players still remember Star Control II well, and like most fans, want to return to its world again.

Most fans of the series will probably consider this the true “Star Control III,” as opposed to the actual game called Star Control III. The reason being that despite the shared name Star Control III was made by a different studio for Accolade after the original team refused to make a sequel. As such the Star Control moniker stayed with Accolade even when the original designers were given the rights back. They released a remaster of Star Control II called the Ur-Quan Masters, which this new game is a direct sequel to. Many fans found the original Star Control III to be lacking in comparison to its predecessors, and something most sequels are often accused of. However, the shift in designers probably only exacerbated any such feelings. Hopefully, this new trailer has given fans something to look forward to and the wait is close to over.
