Square Enix Announces NieR: Automata Anime Adaptation

Square Enix confirmed that NieR: Automata will receive an anime TV adaptation during the game’s fifth anniversary live stream today after rumors about the animation project appeared at the beginning of this month. A teaser trailer for the anime series was also officially released after the live stream, along with an official Twitter account and website for the show.

The teaser trailer didn’t reveal much information about the anime series but features a drawing of 2B and Pod 042 that could possibly hint at the animation style that the anime will be using. A translation of the trailer states, “The stage is a far future where humanity is defeated by the moon in front of the overwhelming force of ‘mechanical life forms’ that aliens carry out. ‘2B’ belonging to the newly organised Android unit ‘YoRHa’ will throw themselves into a fierce battle to recapture the earth.”

It’s currently unknown how many episodes the series will include, the voice actors, or the show’s release date. However, an official announcement trailer posted by AnimeHype on YouTube gave slightly more information regarding the anime’s development team. The description revealed that anime production company Aniplex would produce the anime series alongside Square Enix, with studio A-1 Pictures handling the animation. Aniplex also shared the show’s announcement on their Twitter account, confirming their role in the production.

NieR: Automata’s fifth-anniversary live stream can be viewed here. Important recaps from the live stream include brand new 2B & 9S artwork by Kazuma Koda, collaboration with Square Enix’s upcoming RPG Babylon’s Fall, and a 50% off sale for NieR: Automata on the PlayStation Store until March 9th. The collaboration between NieR: Automata and Babylon’s Fall will occur during Season 1 and include NieR: Automata-inspired costumes, enemies, and a dungeon.

Although much has yet to be revealed, many NieR: Automata are excited to finally get an anime adaptation after the game was released five years ago.
