In what was one of the strangest stories to come out of 2018, Rapper DeAndre Cortez Way, also known as Soulja Boy, announced that he was releasing his own brand of consoles called the Soulja Gaming System. While the rapper himself hasn’t stated this, it’s possible that these “consoles” are the exact same knock-off emulator systems that are made by Chinese company called ANBERNIC. At first this only consisted of two systems, but soon included third one, the Soulja Boy Mini, which was just a Game Boy clone.
Hey, anyone can dream right? Well this dream has come to a crashing halt, as Soulja Boy has removed all of the consoles, and the website, out of nowhere. Nothing official has been stated on the matter, but this is more than likely due to threatening lawsuit from a certain video game company that doesn’t take too kindly to having their IP’s being used without their permission, Nintendo. The company has always been extremely protective of its copyrights and trademarks, especially this past November when they won a major suit against a couple of big ROM websites.
In addition, other video game companies may have taken legal action against the rapper as well. Promotional images from Tekken and Final Fantasy were also used without consent, so it wouldn’t be a shock if Bandai Namco or Square Enix also sent over lawyers with a cease and desist order. In an ironic twist of fate, the website now redirects to Nintendo’s 3DS page, which you can check out here: http://souljagame.com/. After his site was taken down, the rapper responded on Twitter the only way he could.
A fitting end to this venture, but if you thought Soulja Boy was done with the gaming world, then think again. Despite this setback, the rapper still intends to launch his own esports team in January 2019.
No further information was given, but we can only take wild guesses as to what Soulja Boy intends to do with this newest idea. Let’s just hope he actually checks to see which team names aren’t taken before receiving a visit from their lawyers as well.
