Sony’s Project Morpheus Featured on The Tonight Show

Sony’s Virtual Reality headset Project Morpheus was given its most high-profile exposure yet when it was featured on The Tonight Show, hosted by Jimmy Fallon, last night.

The VR headset’s presence on the show was part of several cutting-edge technological marvels presented by The Verge editor-in-chief Joshua Topolsky, which also included the Lytro Illum camera, a revolutionary camera that takes pictures using light-field technology.

Fallon, whose show has previously mentioned other gaming peripherals like the Kinect and Oculus Rift, tried out Project Morpheus along with actor Channing Tatum in a demo that took place in a medieval courtyard. Both men controlled their actions with two PlayStation Move controllers.

As Topolsky notes, very little gameplay footage of Project Morpheus had been seen until then, let alone footage of two people playing in the same game space.

The demo quickly descended into chaos, with Fallon psychotically punching a mannequin dressed in plate armor while Tatum shot at the talk show host repeatedly with a crossbow. The demo concluded when an enormous dragon descended on the two and engulfed them, leaving both men in awe.

So far, very little details of Project Morpheus have been released, aside from the certain nuggets such as a 2014 release date and exclusivity to the PlayStation 4.

Project Morpheus’s high profile exposure on The Tonight Show is further evidence of the impending tidal wave of change approaching videogaming once VR headsets become commercially available. So far, Sony, Oculus VR, Samsung, and now Valve are set debut their headsets in the coming months, and its a sure bet that they will be the centerpiece of next week’s E3.
