On a recent Reddit thread, fans digging into the codes for Sony’s direct.playstation.com (the company’s hardware website) found reference that PlayStation 5 pre-orders could be limited to one per household. According to user u/Kgarvey, the source code in the PlayStation Direct website revealed a message that could appear if potential buyers try to order more than one console through the official website. Along with this Reddit user, IGN also confirmed the existence of this code on the website. (As shown below) the image in the code reads “You can only purchase one version of the PS5 Console: Disc or Digital. You have already added one PS5 Console to your cart.”
Along with this source code, the same Reddit user found label that Sony could add to PS4 games that indicate to buyers that they are backward compatible with the PS5. However, there is a disclaimer by the user stating that this could also mean that accessories like controllers are backwards compatible with the PS5 (such as controllers and headsets). Aside from this label, Sony has already clarified that many of their popular games will be backwards compatible with the PlayStation 5.
This would not be the first time Sony limited pre-orders, as they did the same with the PlayStation 4 pre-orders. As said in the message, only one version of the console can be pre-ordered as well. Meaning, only one person can order the PS5 or the PS5 digital, but not both at the same time. As of now though, there is no limit from second-hand retailers that are also allowing pre-orders for the PlayStation 5. Since the time of this writing, Sony has made it clear that they will give plenty of time beforehand before pre-orders go up (as there is no definite release date for it just yet), along with plans to have nearly ten million consoles available at its launch date.
