Sony Announces New PlayStation 5 Models With Slimmer Look

Sony has announced a brand new model for the PlayStation 5 console for the upcoming holidays.

The new model announced directly from Sony’s PlayStation blog shows a new, while familiar look to the PlayStation 5 physical body. The new model has a black horizontal line on both sides of the face plate.

What’s also new here for the physical body, is that instead of the original 2 face plates that could be removed for different colors Sony offers, there’s now 4 individual removable plates. The new model also has a glossy texture on the top two plates, with the bottom plates using a matte panel. The 2020 model used a coarse texture for the 2 plates, which also acted as a neat easter egg full of tiny △ O X ◻, a nod to the iconic symbols on the PlayStation controllers.

Sony says the new PlayStation 5 model has a reduced form factor of 30%, weighs 18% less for the Digital Edition, and 24% less for the Disc Edition. The PlayStation 5 with the disc drive protrudes out much noticeably now, where the original model had a more sleek look that masked the bulky size along with the disc drive. The disc drive on the new 2023 model can be removed, and replaced with one of the attachable face plates to retain a slimmer look like that of the Digital Edition.

The new model has also replaced the two ports on the front, removing the USB-A completely, and adding two USB-C ports supporting 10Gbps.The USB-A is now moved to the back of the console.

Included in both models are a horizontal stand, with a vertical stand being made as a separate purchase for $29.99.

The PlayStation 5 with disc drive will cost $499.99USD, with the Digital Edition costing $449.99 USD. Sony says the new model will go on sale in November and will replace the now older model.
