Sony Abandons Appeal Regarding 2011 Hacking Scandal

In the aftermath of the PSN hacking debacle in 2011, Sony had its hands full with lawsuits. One such case was filed by the U.K.’s Information Commissioner’s Office, citing negligence.

In January, the ICO assessed Sony a £250,000 penalty, roughly $377,575. This is chump change for Sony so it’s not financially surprising that they are backing off.

What’s interesting is that Sony acknowledged they were backing off not to display an admission of guilt, but because they do not want to have to disclose sensitive information.

After careful consideration we are withdrawing our appeal,” a Sony representative told CVG. “This decision reflects our commitment to protect the confidentiality of our network security from disclosures in the course of the proceeding. We continue to disagree with the decision on the merits.
