SEGA’s Acquisition Of Mobile Game Developer Rovio Succeds

SEGA announced that their acquisition of the Finnish-based mobile video developer Rovio was successful early Friday morning on Twitter. In it’s celebratory post it welcomed the mobile game developer into it’s family.

“…We’re so thrilled to celebrate Rovio becoming a member of the SEGA Group,” the tweet read. “Get ready for exciting adventures ahead”

Rovio is wildly known for developing the Angry Birds mobile franchise that had sprung into worldwide popularity in the early 2010s. SEGA had first announced its intentions of acquiring the mobile game developer in April 2023, intending to bring SEGA’s content to the mobile game market in addition to other expansive opportunities using Rovio’s knowledge in mobile game live service. The acquisition was said to cost SEGA roughly $776 million.

The original press release described the acquisition as beneficial to both companies, with SEGA pledging to help Rovio “go beyond” its mobile game portfolio. Alexandre Pelletier-Normand, CEO of Rovio, and Haruki Satomi, President and Group CEO of SEGA Holdings both expressed their excitement towards the acquisition.

“I feel blessed to be able to announce such a transaction with Rovio, a company that owns “Angry Birds”, which is loved across the world, and home to many skilled employees that support the company’s industry-leading mobile game development and operating capabilities…” said Satomi.

“…Our mission is to ‘Craft Joy’ and we are thrilled at the idea of using our expertise and tools to bring even more joy to our players, enhancing and expanding Rovio’s and SEGA’s vibrant IPs…” Pelletier-Normand said.

The acquisition continues to be well received by fans of both developers. While it remains uncertain what Rovio will be working on in the future, its new relationship with SEGA will more than likely shake up the mobile gaming landscape.
