Sagat has returned to Street Fighter and he’s looking tall (and weirdly lanky).
“I cannot lose, not to anyone”, is a pretty hilarious quote from Sagat, considering his whole character revolves around that time he lost to someone. With gameplay taking place in his personal stage, the Proud Spire, Sagat’s got all of the moves you’d expect to see from him: Tiger Uppercut, Tiger Knee, the high and low variants of Tiger Shot, Tiger Cannon as his level 1 (which can blow through enemy level 1 projectiles). All these specials accompanied by probably the tallest character model in the game at this time, with the long limbs to match as we can see from Sagat being able to punish M. Bison’s Scissor Kick on block, something reserved only for incredibly long and fast buttons. We’ll have to see if his character height effects his hurtbox once he releases.
Sagat isn’t just a callback to the classics though, he’s got a few new tricks up his handwraps. The one that will stand out of players almost immediately is his knee strikes, with a delay between the first hit of his knee strike and a follow-up that depends on your input, this move is reminiscent of a rekka (though for Street Fighter 6, most players will get traumatized flashbacks of Ken’s Jinrai Kicks).
Also notable in this trailer is Sagat’s level 2 super. As far as we’re shown, Sagat has 4 variants of a level 2: the first is an animated cinematic that likely does the most damage, the second ends in a downward elbow strike and likely leads to better oki but less damage than the first, the third is a side swap for getting out of the corner, and the last pops the opponent up for extended combo opportunities. A few of the level 2s in Street Fighter 6 offer some options, but this is definitely the most varied one we’ve seen in the game so far.
From the trailer, Sagat seems like a really fun character. Of course, Sagat has always been “shoto” adjacent, and in Street Fighter 6, a game where shotos have ruled the roost since the game’s launch, only time will tell if he’s actually cool and fun or if he’s another “fireball into Drive Rush, fish with 5mk into Drive Cancel” character. Still, the trailer was pretty cool. Sagat will release on August 5th, being the first character of Street Fighter 6‘s Season 3 DLC, and if you’re excited for Crimson Viper coming this winter, or Alex coming next year, you can now purchase Street Fighter 6‘s Year 3 Ultimate Pass to receive all the characters for Season 3.
