Rockstar Announces Partnership With Modding Roleplay Community

Rockstar has announced today that they’ve acquired Cfx.re. In a news post, Rockstar states they’re proud to work with Cfx.re, “the team behind the biggest Rockstar roleplay and creator communities, FiveM and RedM.”

“Over the past few years, we’ve watched with excitement as Rockstar’s creative community have found new ways to expand the possibilities of Grand Theft Auto V and Red Dead Redemption 2, particularly through the creation of dedicated roleplay servers. As a way to further support those efforts, we recently expanded our policy on mods to officially include those made by the roleplay creative community.”

The partnership with the popular mod team will provide added official support to GTAV’s many servers, and no doubt in the TBA release of GTA VI. Many of the modding tools were used in Grand Theft Auto V and Red Dead Redemption 2, which gave unique and custom game experiences for players.

Late last year, Rockstar updated its policies on modding, specifically for what’s dubbed role-play servers. Those policies gave players the ability to create new and enjoyable experiences through dedicated servers, however, Rockstar was apt to note as well that players could not alter any stories, missions, maps, or use the modded servers for any monetary gain whatsoever.

While Rockstar is known for developing one of the most sold games of all time, Grand Theft Auto V— a game over a decade old now and still receives updates for— Rockstar still finds itself in combative battles with modders and the GTA V community. Take-Two Interactive has previously sent cease and desist letters to modding developers, along with many DMCA takedown notices. It doesn’t help that only this past week Rockstar announced port for Red Dead Redemption, not even a remaster in any way, further embroiling the community in furor.

GTAVI is still set to be on track in development currently, as Rockstar has indicated they are working on the next iteration in the Grand Theft Auto series— without officially naming it Grand Theft Auto VI. There were also the infamous leaks last year which revealed a slew of in-game development of the game, which Rockstar responded to all but again confirming the next title. There’s also been recent indications from Take-Two Interactive and Rockstar, that sometime during 2024, they are estimated to earn $8 billion in sales. That’s not from Grand Theft Auto Online, nor the addition today of official modding servers. It’s one other clear confirmation of Grand Theft Auto VI.
