River City: Rival Showdown Gets New Singleplayer Story Mode and Port

Looks like Arc System Works America, Inc‘s River City: Showdown, the remake of the retro 1989’s River City Ransom is receiving a new story mode, as well as a port to the Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 4 and PC.

The River City series is still going strong all these years later, with River City: Tokyo Rumble being released for the Nintendo 3DS, River City Ransom: Underground, the sequel to the NES River City Ransom releasing 30 years later, and lastly River City: Girls making its way to the PC, PS4, Xbox One, and Switch back in 2019. River City Girls 0 also made its way to modern consoles  It now looks like River City: Rival Showdown is now being ported over to modern hardware since releasing in 2016 for the Nintendo 3DS.

In July, Arc System Works announced that River City: Rival Showdown is receiving a digital release on PlayStation 4, Nintendo Switch, and PC after originally being on the Nintendo 3DS.  Along with this port, the publisher revealed this past Wednesday that River City: Showdown is getting a new single-player story mode; “Riki’s Story.”  This story mode will follow the three-day events of the River City story through Riki’s view to find his girlfriend, Mami.  In order for players to access this new content, the player must clear the other new piece of content, “Yamada’s Side,” or have existing save data for River City Saga: Three Kingdoms.

According to Arc System Works blog announcement from July 6th, 2023, “Yamada’s Side,” is the new prequel story mode that lets players take control of Yamada “and play the prequel to the incident. How did “Yamada” expand his ambitions? And what is his purpose? Experience the dark machinations behind the incident.”  After the player has cleared this piece of content, then they can move on to “Riki’s story.”

The publishers also shared a few images of what “Riki’s Story” would look like (one is below).  Apparently, these images are from the Switch version. These images come from Gematsu’s article:
