The Golden Joystick Awards have been considered to be one of the premier awards shows in the gaming industry. While other shows hand out their awards via selection of critics or judges, the Golden Joystick gives theirs out based on an online voting ballot that is open to everyone. After receiving millions of votes, this year the remake of Resident Evil 2 bagged the top prize and was declared the Ultimate Game of the Year at the 37th Golden Joystick Awards.
Considering all of the amazing titles that have released this year alone, this is an amazing accomplishment for the development team at Capcom. Even more impressive is that Resident Evil 2 launched way back in January, the beginning of the year. That means it had to outlast numerous releases up to this point to even be considered for the award, such as Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice, The Outer Worlds, Call of Duty: Modern Warfare, and the unstoppable monster that was Untitled Goose Game.
This really speaks volumes to how much the game was, and still is, beloved by the gaming community. Of course it was also nearly unanimously acclaimed upon release, with some considering it to be not only the best game in the franchise, but one of the best games of all time. If there is blueprint for rebuilding a game from the ground up and making it the best thing since sliced bread, Resident Evil 2 is probably the perfect example. In addition, this may also set the tone for the upcoming Game Awards next month, as that is generally considered to be the “Academy Awards” for video games.
Capcom’s title wasn’t the only thing to win some gold that night. There were a plethora of awards given out throughout the evening, some of which we’ll go over. In a bit of a surprise, Days Gone won Best Storytelling, while Gears 5 won Best Xbox Game which wasn’t that much of a shocker. Another Capcom title, Devil May Cry V won Best Visual Design and Untitled Goose Game nabbed the Breakthrough Award. Other notables include WoW Classic winning PC Game of the Year, Super Smash Bros. Ultimate getting Best Nintendo Game, Control winning the Critics Choice Award, and Resident Evil 2 winning another award, Best Audio. Gamesradar has the entire list of winners which you can check out here.
