Resident Evil 2 Remake has now become Capcom’s best-selling game in the series’ history. In an update to its list of Platinum Titles, Resident Evil 2 Remake has topped 12.60 million units, surpassing Resident Evil 7 which sold 12.40 million. Among the Platinum list, Monster Hunter World remains at number one, with a staggering 19 million units, though in total, the Resident Evil franchise as a series whole surpasses Capcom’s other franchises, as Resident Evil has a cumulative 146 million units sold.
Resident Evil 2 Remake first released in 2019 seeking to both reboot the franchise, bring in a younger audience, and remake a classic PlayStation title. The Remake was positively well received, and the numbers today indicate it’s still a highly popular title for gamers to play through. Resident Evil 2 Remake also received a next-gen upgrade just last year in June, bringing 4K support, ray tracing, higher frame rate, and 3D audio. The next-gen upgrade also came the same day to both 2017’s Resident Evil 7, and 2020’s Resident Evil 3.
The Resident Evil franchise has seen a huge resurgence in the popularity of their games ever since dedicating development to their older iconic titles. Just a few months ago in March, saw the highly anticipated remake release of Resident Evil 4, which reached its 5 million sales milestone late last month, becoming the fastest-selling in the franchise. There’s also been numerous film and television Resident Evil adaptations, such as a live-action Resident Evil, and an animated Resident Evil: Infinite Darkness, both available on Netflix.
While there’s been no word on what’s next in the Resident Evil franchise, it’s been rumored a Resident Evil 5 remake could be coming if Capcom is set on remaking their old titles, whereas a mainline sequel to Resident Evil Village is eventual to continue the franchise’s story.
