PS4’s next Big Software Update Detailed; Beta Tests Begin

Yes the title is correct, today in a Playstation Blog post Sony revealed some key details of what will be included in their next big software update for the Playstation 4. What many people will be overjoyed about is the fact that the Playstation 4 will, after update 4.50 goes live, support an external HDD drive.

For those unaware, the Xbox One had one feature that the Playstation 4 never did, the fact that an external hard drive could be used as system storage. While the Playstation did however allow people to swap out the internal hard drive for a larger one, the system failed to allow a usb or hard drive to be used externally. This of course added the problem that the playstation would always have a limited storage space. Sony said in the post today  that, “With this update, you have the option to store content to an external HDD. Just plug a USB 3.0 HDD into your PS4, and voilà, you now have more space on the console.” No need to worry about storage space now as the update will support up to an 8TB external hard drive.

Thats not the only big change added in the 4.50 software update, Players will now be able to use their favorite in-game screenshots as a background. “Drop-shadows on text, and the option to dim the Function Area, will help keep the system icons and texts on the home screen clearly visible even if the background image you selected is super bright.”

The new update will also adjust the notifications screen which should help make it easier to navigate. Prior to this update, the app for notifications had a number of different tabs that made finding what you’re looking for very tedious. Now however, Sony has decided to combine all the tabs into a single list that allows for easy navigation of any new notifications of downloads or updates taking place or that were installed while in sleep mode.

For those who will be using the Playstation VR, you will now be able to watch 3d blu-rays. “If you’re a fan of 3D movies, and you own PlayStation VR, we’ve got good news — this update adds the ability to view 3D movies in stereoscopic 3D directly on the PS VR headset. Grab some popcorn and enjoy!”

This is just a few of the major changes that will be included in the update, Sony has yet to release a full list of everything being implemented. As for today, people who applied to test the new update will be sent an email with instructions on how to obtain a beta version to test out before update 4.50 is released.
