The history of Prey has been a quiet one. It released in 2006 to generally positive reviews. A sequel was in the works until it disappeared, having quietly died in development hell. Then during E3 this year, it made a surprise appearance in what looks like title only.
We’ve reported in the past that players will have the option of controlling either male or female version of Morgan, the protagonist and that the game will be more than sequel or remake. In the last trailer, we found out that Morgan Yu was the subject of experimentation intended to make human lives better, and in the latest trailer, we find out how humanity got to that point.
Turns out it’s all predicated on Kennedy surviving his assassination back in the 60’s.
Instead of using in-engine footage, or a cutscene the trailer is made as a motion comic. The trailer plays out like an informational video talking about the history of TrasStar, the company that made Talos I, the station where the game is set. During the space race, the Soviet Union launched a satellite in an attempt to beat the US. When the satellite went offline a group of cosmonauts was sent to investigate and found a mysterious alien lifeform, later called Typhon. It didn’t go well, and the Soviet Union kept it quiet as long as they could until they turned to Kennedy for help.
With the help of the US, the two countries were able to contain the threat in the satellite. After the assassination attempt, Kennedy began to convert the satellite into an R&D facility to research the Typhon. The research proved fruitless and since this is a sci-fi game the Typhon got out and killed a bunch of people. The US shut down the base until 2030 when TransStar bought the facility and converted it into the Talos I. Having cracked the secret of the Typhon they have used the knowledge to better humanity as a whole.
I’m sure things are going to continue to go swimmingly.
Prey is slated for a 2017 release for the Xbox One, PS4, and PC
