PlayerUnknown Shuts Down Prologue: Go Wayback!, Layoffs Soon to Follow

PlayerUnknown, a newly formed studio that came to be in 2021, released a game titled Prologue: Go Wayback! about a little over 6 months ago. The game itself is a survival game. Well, on June 3rd, PlayerUnknown officially announced that they will halt future development of Prologue: Go Wayback! and that the studio will undergo restructuring to continue developing its Melba technology.

PlayerUnknown Productions was founded back in 2021 by Brandon Greene after leaving Krafton. Then the studio went on to develop and release Prologue: Go Wayback! to early access in November of 2025, and it unfortunately wasn’t able to catch on and garner an audience, as the highest concurrent player count on Steam was 182  and didn’t reach anything higher than double digits since a week after its initial launch. And now PlayerUnknown Productions posted a tweet on X, and they go on to say this about the future of the game and studio:

“Unfortunately, I have reached the limits of how far I can continue to fund this journey in its current form. As a result, I have made the hard decision to restructure the studio. We will continue developing our Melba technology with a smaller team, while halting further development of Go Wayback.”

It always sucks when a game ultimately fails, as the following events follow, such as studio reconstruction and cancellation of future titles. But in the case of PlayerUnknown, they will only face layoffs to restructure the studio and continue developing their technology, just with a smaller team. This outcome is still terrible, as many developers will lose their jobs and have no certainty about their future. The only really good thing about this is that the game will still be playable: it will go free for future players and receive one last update. Those who purchased it may also get a refund, as PlayerUnknown is looking into a possible refund for both Steam and Epic Games. It is currently unknown how many will be laid off, only that it is happening, and it’s unknown what is next for the studio, as the future is currently uncertain. One can hope they learn from this and make better choices for future projects.

Having been exposed to storytelling for so long, I have been influenced, and through that influence, I seek to write and create my own stories that others can enjoy and that I can be proud of.
