Petroglyph Studios Announces Earthbreakers: a RTS and FPS Fusion

Petroglyph Studios has quietly released a teaser trailer for a game that is a spiritual successor to the Command and Conquer series. Command and Conquer is a RTS series much like Age of Empires but under the leadership of Electronic Arts after they purchased Westwood Studios in 1998. The last entry, outside of remasters of older games, was a free to play mobile title Command and Conquer: Rivals in 2018. To fill the void, Petroglyph Studios, who is composed mostly of ex-Westwood employees, is developing a new game called Earthbreakers.

Eathbreakers is not a normal entry into the RTS genre, as it combines elements of the FPS genre as well. Most notably, players will be abandoning the omniscient overview perspective for the perspective of a singular soldier. Players can choose from a variety of soldier classes or even pilot vehicles if they have been built. Earthbreakers is also a team based game, meaning players will never be alone and will have to share resources among each other. Teamwork will be the difference between success and defeat.

Of course, Earthbreakers has elements from RTS games, such as resource collecting and base building. The primary resource players will be fighting over is a mineral called Vilothyte which can only be collected with a special vehicle called a harvester. It is nearly identical to Command and Conquer’s Tiberium another crystal-esque mineral requiring a special harvester to gather.

Collected Vilothyte enters a pool which the team can utilise to build more machinery and additional upgrades to their base. Building upgrades unlocks more soldier classes and vehicles to field against your opponents. Much like all RTS games, leading the tech race and fielding more powerful units will give those players an advantage.

Earthbreakers will have a variety of classes to play with such as Technician who can repair vehicles to the flame based class Firefly. There is also be a wide array of vehicles from armoured personnel carriers, to tanks, to even mobile artillery. All classes and vehicles have strengths to demolish opposition but also weaknesses that can be exploited.

Earthbreakers currently has a planned release sometime in 2020 and will be coming to Windows. It currently is listed on Steam to add to your wishlist.

Griffin Gilman: Gaming may very well be half of my personality, so it is only natural that I write about them. The best genre is RPGs, while the best game is Nier Automata. That's not an opinion but a matter of facts.
