The Payday 3 developers announced the removal of controversial Anti-Cheating software Denuvo from the game this afternoon, and gamers are happy.
While Anti-Cheating software is not uncommon in the video game industry, Denuvo has managed to acquire an incredibly negative reputation amongst gamers. According to MUO, Denuvo’s infamous “anti-tamper protection” protects a video game’s files from being accessed by unwanted parties. So if a hacker were to try and access a game’s files, the hackers attempt would be flagged as a “fingerprint” by Denuvo, and the software would then notify the game developers.
Unsurprisingly, this would make games increasingly difficult to modify, and because of how intertwined modding culture is with the gaming community, many gamers have made an effort to boycott games with the software. That said, there are more reasons gamers hate Denuvo.
MUO also noted that Denuvo riddled some software with performance issues. Not only that, but because Denuvo needs a license to operate developers often have to deal with hearty fees. But despite vocal uproar, Anti-Cheat Software like Denuvo has seemingly become a permanent fixture in the video game industry. So it was a pleasant surprise to many when it was announced to be removed from Payday 3. While there wasn’t a specific reason why the developers decided to remove the software, many gamers are simply glad it’s gone.
Payday 3 will be launching soon for the PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X/S, and PC via Steam and the Epic Game Store. Pre-orders for the Standard, Silver, and Gold Editions are available on Steam and the Epic Game Store. For more information head over to the official Payday 3 website and social media.
