As conventions are starting to optimistically plan for the 2021 year, ReedPop and Penny Arcade, the organizers of the PAX gaming conventions, have just announced dates for PAX East in Boston, PAX West in Seattle, and PAX Unplugged in Philadelphia, but canceled PAX South which usually takes place in San Antonio. However, it is planned to return sometime in 2022. In an official announcement on their website and Twitter account, they specified that their motivation for announcing these dates which are at the very least, seven months away, is to allow time for their partners to start planning – even though these in-person conventions are contingent upon the global and local COVID-19 situation.
However, they are cautiously optimistic that in-person conventions can be held next year following all CDC and WHO guidelines to ensure public safety. Though, there are some concerns for international attendees regarding travel restrictions and possible mandatory quarantines. Yet, in the chance that the COVID-19 situation has not been alleviated, they will either cancel the convention entirely or make it virtual.
The last PAX convention that was held was PAX East late last February despite growing coronavirus concerns. There was a plan to possibly hold PAX West in Seattle over labor day weekend, September 4-7, with increased health and safety measures but it was canceled and instead held a nine-day virtual conference. The organizers appear to be more hopeful for 2021.
More information and updates about the sale of badges and hotel rooms regarding the four conventions will be forthcoming in the upcoming year. Currently, PAX East is scheduled for June 3-6, PAX West is scheduled for September 3-6, and PAX Unplugged is scheduled for December 10-12. PAX Australia will have more information coming soon.
