It looks like Onion Game’s upcoming sandbox title is finally taking shape. The title’s director, Yoshiro Kimura, recently did an interview on what is dubbed The Secret Onion Cellar, newsletter of the studio’s progression. They also released some new artwork to give the title some context. In the interview, Kimura states that the studio’s sandbox title is slated to launch sometime in 2023, as well as speaking candidly about the continued stress of being an indie studio with a large amount of uncertainties.
Kimura doesn’t appear to hold back as he paints a fairly bleak picture of being an indie developer with just one phrase. “Indie game developers are basically bizarre creatures that are constantly running, laughing, and playing chess, all while bleeding profusely,” Kimura said. Kimura also briefly details the mental and physical toll that being an indie developer does to oneself, especially with the budget limitation. He also mentions that this can affect your everyday expenses and other costs.
Despite now having a 2023 release time frame, we still have very little information in regards to this title other than it’s a sandbox title that will have children as a central theme. The game’s existence was initially revealed in 2020, and that it will feature a similar style to another Onion Games title, 2018’s Black Bird. If anything, we can more than likely expect a shoot ’em up style game with an open-world aspect, which sounds exciting on paper, but is hard to put into execution. Thankfully it sounds like we’ll be hearing something very soon about the game, and hopefully a name to put to the title.
Onion Game’s new sandbox title will launch sometime in 2023.
