The Oculus Rift is finally taking in pre-orders tomorrow but those who had backed the project from their origins get a special gift for sticking with company. The founders of Oculus updated their Kickstarter this morning and announced they will be giving a free Kickstarter Edition Oculus Rift for all those who backed the company at the Rift development kit level during their campaign in 2012.
“As a small token of our appreciation for your support, all Kickstarter backers who pledged for a Rift development kit will get a free Kickstarter Edition Oculus Rift!” the message reads. “And like all Rift pre-order purchasers, you’ll receive a bundled copy of Lucky’s Tale and EVE: Valkyrie.”
Facebook acquired Oculus to the tune of $2 billion in February 2013 to the dismay of some of their Kickstarter backers. Nevertheless all backers received all the tier-leveled rewards promised. Giving away a free retail Oculus Rift to the backers is one last thank you to their Kickstarter community before taking the next step.
“You were there at the beginning of our journey — we couldn’t have done it without you. Today marks a new chapter.”
Those who qualify will receive a Kickstarter survey on a date before February 1, 2016 to submit their addresses to but will only receive one if the address provided falls within the 20 countries Rift is launching in. Oculus is working on a solution for those who fall out of that category and will allow them to voice their opinions in the survey.
